Steve Hambuchen's Bio
I began taking and developing photographs when I was 15. After college I went to work for my hometown newspaper (the Log Cabin Democrat in Conway, Arkansas). From there I spent time as a graduate student studying photojournalism at the University of Missouri, home of the National Press Photographers Association's annual "Pictures of the Year" judging. After landing in Portland, Oregon, more than 10 years ago I took a break from daily assignment photography but was lured back into the profession as a photography teacher. In 2000 I returned to shooting full time, now as a freelancer.
As my web site illustrates, I still consider myself primarily a photojournalist and editorial photographer, with real interest in light, composition, story and spontaneity. My clients are quite varied but primarily are interested in images of people working, interacting, living. Except for some portraits, I shoot almost entirely as things are happening, and never stage scenes for journalism work. When public relations or commercial publications require specific scenes and subjects I am most often asked to light and shoot with a "journalistic feel."
I am a client-centered photographer, and want to discuss details and expectations of a project well before shooting begins. Also, where situations allow, I provide editors and art directors with a variety of images from which to choose final images for an article, illustration or promotional campaign.
I am accustomed to holding myself to a high standard and working on a deadline. Since becoming a freelancer I've been shooting Nikon's professional digital cameras, which allow for more reliable shooting especially in difficult light and very fast turn-around and transmission times.
My rates are commonly figured in terms of time (meeting, shooting, editing, traveling, etc.) and usage. One-time use of an editorial image is different from multiple, exclusive use of a p.r. image.
Enjoy my web site, and please contact me with any questions or to discuss your photography needs and how I might help creatively fill them. More samples of my work and contacts for references are available upon request.
